About AHEC West

Fifty years of building
a healthier Appalachia.

Since 1974, AHEC West has worked to strengthen the health workforce serving the communities that need it most.

Who we are

AHEC West is the Western Maryland Area Health Education Center, part of the national AHEC network established to build health workforce capacity in rural and underserved areas. We serve a tri-state region spanning Western Maryland, southwestern Pennsylvania, and West Virginia — communities where the gap between workforce need and workforce availability is most acute.

Our training programs are rooted in the specific realities of Appalachian health — the rural geography, the workforce shortages, the disproportionate burden of behavioral health challenges, and the communities that are navigating recovery, chronic illness, and social determinants every day.

We connect health professionals, students, and community organizations with the training and resources they need to deliver equitable, culturally responsive care. Our online programs are designed for the workforce on the front lines — practical, accredited, and built around real-world impact.

Our Mission

Equitable care starts with a prepared workforce.

AHEC West's mission is to improve the health of underserved and rural populations by developing a diverse, culturally competent health workforce prepared to meet community needs.

What guides our work

The principles behind every course we build and every professional we train.

Rooted in Place

Our curriculum is built for the Appalachian region — not adapted from elsewhere. The communities, the workforce gaps, and the cultural context are all part of how we design training.

Quality You Can Count On

Every course we offer is accredited. We hold our training to the same standards as the credentials it supports — because the communities our graduates serve deserve nothing less.

Equity-Centered

Health equity isn't a subject in our curriculum — it's the reason the curriculum exists. Every course is designed to reduce disparities and build a workforce that reflects and serves its community.
